Emily, as a part of a military family, grew up across many cities, states, and countries. The consistent exposure to different cultures inspired her to pursue studies in International Relations, both in her B.A. at the University of North Georgia and her M.A. at the University College of Dublin. Her academic interests include the abuse of religion for political propaganda, the evolution of terrorist groups, and international relations theory. Her M.A. thesis focused on the perceptions of women in terrorism through the lens of Western media.

After completing her degree in Dublin, Emily decided to stay in Ireland to pursue mission work and be spiritually formed. Her year-long mission in Dublin soon turned into a second year in Uganda. During these two years of mission, Emily helped with prayer groups, retreats, conferences, street ministry, and prison ministry in many underserved environments. It was during this time that she realized the unique love, joy, and tenderness that Jesus has for the unseen in society and her desire to serve them with the same love.

Since returning to the States, Emily has been interning at the Holy See’s Mission to the United Nations. During her time in New York, she has followed various peace and security processes at the UN, primarily related to disarmament. To witness the intersection of faith and international affairs has been a dream come true, and Emily cannot wait to see what God has in store next! She is excited to be a fellow with the John Jay Institute and grow in knowledge, understanding, and faith.

In her free time, Emily enjoys reading Flannery O’Connor, writing terrible short stories and poems for Jesus, and exploring everything that makes this life rich, complicated, and unserious.
